THE LEOPARD PRINT PAJAMAS FROM THE « GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN » MUSIC VIDEO

Belonging to her grandmother, the Sheila Anne pajamas were worn in the music video for « Girls Just Want to Have Fun » from the She’s So Unusual album (Portrait Records, 1983).
The video began playing on MTV in October 1983 and would go on to win « Best Female Video » at the inaugural 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. The lasting love for « Girls Just Want to Have Fun » transcends its dance-able pop sound. Lauper swapped pronouns and various lyrics to change the song from a male perspective about chasing women into a female anthem about autonomy, solidarity, and the importance of women and girls living their lives with freedom and joy.

In 1986, Laura Wills and Cyndi Lauper grabbed a vintage hoop underskirt, some newspapers and issues of Paper Magazine, and created one of the most iconic looks in music history. Paired with a baby blue vintage blouse, a pair of painted pumps, and blue lipstick, the look was styled by Laura Wills and photographed by Annie Leibovitz for the cover of True Colors.
Laura Wills is the owner of the storied NYC vintage shop Screaming Mimi’s, where Cyndi once was an employee. Laura and Cyndi’s fashion inspired each other to push the limits of creativity.
Thirty-nine years later, in 2025 Chappell Roan wore a replica of the newspaper skirt to induct Cyndi Lauper into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
This look was worn on the album cover for True Colors, as well as the music video, and during the 1986/1987 True Colors World Tour. It is also featured in Lauper’s True Colors World Tour 86-87 book. This lot is accompanied by a copy of the True Colors World Tour 86-87 book.
