A comma, for a summer. After the feat of the indomitable Ruade, Marc-Antoine Corticchiato takes us to a sunny beach to dream with apparent lightness in Un bel amour d’été, his latest creation for Parfum d’Empire, inspired by the perfumer’s research into a magnolia-gardenia accord.

A few light notes. A slow awakening under the sun.

In the top notes, the romantic, lazy magnolia, like Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, takes on the mischievousness of turmeric to claim a little spiciness, lending a distinctive character to the accord. The root could have been replaced by cumin for a touch of “dirt”, reminiscent of a summer skin sweating under the sun, but turmeric adds an interesting touch.

Then comes gardenia, taking passion to the point of fury in true Titania style, and exotic Ylang-Ylang, which wrap their creamy petals around it, with the complicity of a sassy vanilla and deep sandalwood in the base notes.

The originality of Un Bel Amour d’Été? Notes of Champaca, the Indo-Malaysian cousin of magnolia, more commonly cultivated for its wood than its bewitching fragrance.

Un Bel Amour d’Été could be likened to a fleeting passion, a seasonal fragrance, but there’s a quest for absolute characteristic of Marc-Antoine Corticchiato’s main creations. Un Bel Amour d’Eté is here to stay.

We’re closer to the gardenia flower worn as a buttonhole by dandies at the opera than to mere memories of one love on the beach, and all the better for it. Even in the midst of a seemingly simple story, Marc-Antoine’s fragrances never lose their timeless, ballsy elegance.

This is one of the most beautiful tributes to gardenia since Gardénia Pétale for Van Cleef & Arpels or Un matin d’orage for Goutal, created by Camille Goutal after a trip to Japan and the memory of fresh gardenia at night, under the rain.

Let’s not forget the majesty of the magnolia either in this beautiful creation.

Un Bel Amour d’Ete par Parfum d’Empire : l’envoûtement de Titania

Une virgule, le temps d’un été. Après la prouesse de l’indomptable Ruade, Marc-Antoine Corticchiato nous emmène rêver avec une apparente légèreté sur une plage ensoleillée au travers d’Un bel amour d’été, sa toute dernière création pour Parfum d’Empire, inspirée par une recherche du parfumeur autour d’un accord magnolia-gardénia.

Quelques notes halées. Un lent réveil sous le soleil.

En tête, le magnolia romantique et paresseux, tel Bottom dans Le songe d’une nuit d’été, s’offre l’espièglerie du curcuma pour prétendre à un peu de piquant. La racine aurait pu être remplacée par du cumin pour le côté “sale”, humain, qui rappelle la peau en été mais le curcuma apporte une touche intéressante.

Vient ensuite le gardénia, poussant la passion jusqu’à la fureur en véritable Titania, et l’exotique Ylang-Ylang, qui l’enlacent de leur pétales crémeux avec la complicité d’une vanille gourmande et d’un santal profond en notes de fond. 

L’originalité d’Un Bel Amour d’Été ? Des notes de Champaca, cousin indomalaisien du magnolia, plus généralement cultivé pour son bois que son parfum pourtant envoûtant. 

Un bel amour d’été pourrait s’apparenter à une passion fugace, un parfum de saison, mais on y retrouve une quête d’absolu caractéristique des créations de Marc-Antoine Corticchiato. 

On est plus proche du gardénia porté à la boutonnière par les dandys en soirées que de l’amour à la plage et c’est tant mieux. Même au cœur d’une histoire en apparence simple, Marc-Antoine ne dépare jamais ses parfums d’une élégance intemporelle et “couillue”.

Un des plus beaux hommages au gardénia depuis Gardénia Pétale pour Van Cleef & Arpels ou Un Matin d’Orage chez Goutal, réalisé par Camille Goutal, même si le magnolia est également un acteur principal de cette fragrance.
